Plan First, Then Decorate!

Choosing the perfect kid room furniture can be an overwhelming experience for parents & kids alike, so here’s a few things to consider when first starting out:

Making a plan to organize your Kids Room!

Just as when decorating for adults, when decorating for kids, form should follow function first–and then aesthetic taste. In other words the first step should always be to consider how the room will be used, not only in general terms, but in detail. Even though decorating your kid’s rooms is your ultimate goal, you’ll be wise to consider organizing it first which will then make the decorating part of it a lot easier!

·         Start with what the room will be used for first before getting into what it will look like. What specific activities need to be accommodated in this particular space?

·         How many kids will be sleeping there? If it's just one, do you expect that he or she will have to share sometime in the next few years?

·         Will the bedroom be his or her main space for play as well as sleep, or will there be a separate play area?

·         Will the child need an area or desk to do homework? Maybe not now, but later?

  • Where will toys be stored for easy access? Making it easier to get toys and put them away will help your child to keep their room clean (good luck!)

·         Will friends be sleeping over? Do you need a extra sleep area?

·         Will you be reading with your child at night in the bedroom? Where will the lighting be located?

·         Are they are really into arts and crafts? What type of work surfaces will be used and how easy will it be to clean up?

·         Are they likely to get very tall and need a larger or longer bed?

Your plan should consider these basic elements of a child's room:

  • Location of Bed, Night stand and any other furniture
  • Location of Television, Movie’s and Games
  • Location of desk, chair and lamp for homework
  • Which surface(s) will be used for art and play (can be the floor)
  • Place for a mirror that is at the right height
  • Place to store hanging and folded clothes and to keep dirty clothes
  • Storage for books, toys and games

8 Simple Strategies to make both you and your Kids Happy!

When it comes to decorating a child's room, your approach should be much different from decorating an adult bedroom.

For kids, their bedroom is where they play games, read, listen to music, day-dream, or just go to be alone sometimes. So use these eight strategies to help create a space that will make you both happy:

1. Talk to your child. Find out what activities and fantasies he or she enjoys; what their favorite color is; and what's unique about their personality that a theme could be built around.

2. Allow your child to help. Let them have a say about colors, fabrics, and how they want to display their collectibles.

3. Make the room multi-functional. Since children use their room for many activities besides sleeping, it should have several different zones, such as a play area, reading area, and entertainment area.

4. Make storage a priority. Try shelving, large decorative wicker baskets, plastic see-through containers, and closets that contain plenty of shelving and racks.

5. Keep window treatments simple. Avoid long draperies. Shades, blinds, and shorter curtains are safer choices. The fabric should be versatile, and patterns should be repeated in other items in the room, such as in pillows, quilts, lampshades, bed ruffles, etc.

6. Choose the right lighting. A child’s room should include both task lighting for homework and reading, and soothing light for quieter times. A nightlight is also important.

7. Use wallpaper or paint.  To add color and texture, you can apply whimsical borders along the top edges of the walls, and clouds or stars on the ceiling. Make sure walls are washable, so if you are using paint, choose a semi-gloss or gloss finish. Kids love bright colors, but you should limit any strong color to only one wall.

8. Allow your child to select the design theme. Here are just a few: firehouse fun room, starry night, angels, rainbows, unicorns, baseball, a bedroom for a princess, underwater scenery, outer space, race cars, airplanes, trains, jungle motifs, wizards and dragons, and dinosaurs.

Your first goal is to create a kid room that flows. One that works in a way that’s practical and also makes sense to your child.

Decorating with your child offers a great opportunity to display your playful side, while doing some memorable family bonding, so have fun with it!
